Understanding IT Culture

Not all corporate executives realize the essentiality of IT culture. Little do they know that it is one of the most important ways to maximize team efficiency. Not only that, an IT team’s effectiveness and morale can get a large boost if they are well appreciated.

Experts believe that CEOs think that problems concerning their IT departments can be blamed on wrong use or lack of technology. However, it was found out that most of the time, it is the people who are in this department that needs some fixing. IT culture that has been carefully designed, continuously monitored, and actively managed is crucial to a successful project plan.

Ways to Understand IT Culture

  1. Caring for the workforce
A caring management is the pillar of trust, employee engagement, and loyalty within the organization. Showing you care for your workforce provides a positive effect on employee growth enhancement, creates an excellent team environment, and reduces weariness on the part of the workforce.

As each has his own story to tell outside the workplace, it is best to know each team member. The working environment can be impersonal at times but if you get to know their personal lives, you would understand their day to day performance.

  2. Making the workplace safe
Creativity can be sometimes challenged most especially when there is a rift within the workforce. A good leader must be aware of this issue at all times. If there is no known threat, may it be physical or emotional, smooth workflow would ensue, thus, the mind’s creative ability is not restricted.

Once the workplace is rid of threats, trust is not a hard virtue to find. This doesn’t only happen to the IT department workers but in other departments as well. Quality leadership should include fairness, mutual respect, and organizational transparency.

  3. Developing asynchronous workflow
In conventional organizations, in-person and whiteboard meetings, online discussions and alternative ways of collaboration could result to lost information. This results to context deficit on the part of those who are out of the venue at that particular time.

Developing an asynchronous workflow makes up being able to work on any task, anywhere and at any given time. Ideas or projects discussed inside the meeting room never gets out of the mind of those not present during the meetings with the use of communication platforms synched with the meeting taking place inside the room. All information, guides, and notes are archived and can be viewed anytime they need it.

  4. Practice meritocracy
Practicing meritocracy is another way of getting the attention of the IT workforce. Here, employees are judged based on their contributions and never on the gender, race, or type of vehicle they drive.

  5. Encourage experimentation
Encouraging small or large experiments helps teams to discover new ideas and provides hints that can help mold future decisions. The lessons from a failed plan can give way for future developments and better results would come out.
