What if Your Career isn’t Truly the One for You?

What if Your Career isn’t Truly the One for You?

Individuals who know what they want to do early on in life are fortunate.

For some, it may take them years or decades to figure what they want to do. Others are crippled by that thought; others are somewhat experimental in nature until they find that one thing. There are those, however, who do not believe in such ideologies.

If you’ve ever noticed the background of Nobel Prize or Pulitzer Prize winners, they’re most likely those who have practiced their calling since they were younger – say since high school, perhaps. As a result, it’s easy for us to judge ourselves and settle because society sets a timeline on success. This type of belief isn’t exactly something engraved in stone and has been proven by various late-bloomer personalities such as J.K. Rowling and Vera Wang.

There is nothing wrong with you, you may just be what people call, a “late bloomer”. Not sure which career path to take? Here are some tips that might help enlighten you.

Experiment

Perhaps you’re thinking that you’re too old to do so. Thing is, there might be something out there for you that you haven’t explored yet because you were too afraid. Experimenting with your career is only a waste of time if you do it without intent. That means doing holistic learning. Don’t settle yet unless you know it’s the thing you want to do for a long term. Experimenting with your career gives you more room for growth and self-actualization.

Be Selfish

Yes, you heard that right. Be selfish in a sense where you are more inclined to what’s right for you rather than doing what pleases the crowd. It’s easy to compare ourselves to others, forgetting what we are capable of. Wherever you go, the grass is always greener on the other side – yours may be too and you’re not even realizing it! Selfish isn’t always negative if it means taking care of yourself. Let go of the thought that somebody has it better than you. You will never be truly satisfied with your career if you consistently compare yourself to others. It may be that what you do now is what your heart truly desires but is overwhelmed by your own envious thoughts.

Don’t Think

If you’re the perfectionist type, it’s difficult to ignore everything. You want to be in control. However, overthinking is more like worrying and we all know that worry is stressful. That said, overthinking can take a toll on our emotional and physical health. Overthinking or over-planning blocks out our ability to think clearly and rationally. Can’t stop overthinking? Let go of everything that bothers you even just for a while. Take a social media hiatus, spend quality time with your loved ones, or simply find a habit to do when you get home. Whatever it is, take your mind off of things once in a while.

Your career does not define who you are. Perhaps you’re working as an accountant or maybe a teacher right now, but if you want to be a programmer or a singer perhaps, go for it.
